Labour conducts blitz inspections at various private security companies, 15 to 17 Mar

Private security to be the focal point during Department of Labour’s blitz inspections

The private security industry throughout the whole Free State province will be under the microscope to check the level of compliance with labour laws. The Department of Labour, through its Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) chief directorate will be conducting blitz inspections at various private security companies from the 15 - 17 March 2016.

The Inspection and Enforcement Services is tasked with the responsibility of examining how national labour standards are applied in the workplace through inspection and enforcement of labour legislation. In addition to that, this directorate is also tasked with the provision of education and advice to stakeholders and partners on labour market policies.

Subsequent to the inspections, a blitz report will be compiled and, to a certain extent, be utilized to influence the direction of deliberations during the up-coming Private Security Seminar which will be held from the 30 - 31 March 2016.

“Protection of vulnerable workers is one of the core mandates of the Department of Labour, and the security industry is one of those sectors constituted by such workers. Thus we took a conscious decision to turn our lens around this time to this sector and ensure that we help improve its conditions of work,” said Chief Inspector Mr. Tibor Szana.

Strategic partners of the Department such as the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) will form part of the entourage during these inspections. Targeted areas are; Bloemfontein, Ficksburg, Kroonstad and Welkom, and no less than 33 companies are envisaged to be inspected.

The blitz inspections will be preceded by an advocacy session which will be held on the 14 March 2016 at Bloemfontein Labour Centre.  The session is aimed at capacitating captains of the security industry and other strategic stakeholders with relevant information regarding labour legislation, the services of the department and the benefits thereof.

Media is invited to attend both the advocacy session and the blitz inspections, and for further details, please contact the undersigned.
