Police pays tribute to Brigadier Piet Beyleveld

Police pay tribute to the man who worked tirelessly

It is with shock and sadness that the South African Police Service today learnt about the passing of former celebrated top-cop Brigadier Piet Beyleveld. The former detective at Brixton Murder and Robbery Unit was a member of the South African Police Service with almost 38 years’ service when he left the SAPS.

Former colleagues and the entire management of the South African Police Service today paid tribute to the man who worked tirelessly to bring notorious criminals to book.  He always maintained a particularly high success rate in serious and violent cases which he investigated.  This he usually attributed to a great sense for patience, also patience during the interrogation processes of suspects.

“Brigadier Piet Beyleveld will be remembered by many police officers and former colleagues as a man that could hardly rest until a case is solved and put through Courts of Law successfully.

Criminals would remember him as the detective with the soft voice that eventually cornered them with his unique interviewing techniques,” said the Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Lieutenant General de Lange

Police management conveys their sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the distinguished former police officer.

Brigadier Beyleveld also successfully investigated several serial killings and brought killers like Moses Sithole, Cedric Maake, Lazarus Mazingane, Sipho Mhlangathi and others to book.  He also solved the Leigh Mathews murder case by arresting Donovan Moodley. Moodley kidnapped and murdered Leigh. Beyleveld also investigated the murder of seven-year old Sheldean Human from Claremont, Pretoria relentlessly.  He arrested Andrew Jordaan (25) within hours of Sheldean going missing.  Jordaan pointed out the place where he left the body to Beyleveld.

Piet Beyleveld always used to say of Cedric Maake that he has rid the community of South Africa of a particularly cruel murderer. Maake shot 23 people and raped 15 women at the time.

A biography “Beyleveld: Dossier of a Serial Sleuth” was recently published.  It is understood that another book on his life and work might see the light soon.
