North West Health holds White Cane Safety Rally, 23 Oct

In an effort to increase public awareness on the importance of the white Cane for the safe movement and independence of people living with visual impairments, North West Department of Health together with South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB) will on Friday, 23 October 2015 hold a White Cane Safety Rally.

White cane is a tool used by the blind for independent navigation. It is also used by individuals who may have a small amount of vision remaining to get to work, school, shop and travel.

The rally is aimed at promoting special consideration to the blind on our streets and highways, to make people more fully aware of the meaning of the white cane and of the need for motorists to exercise special care for the blind persons who carry white cane.

The rally will start with a health walk in the morning (08h00) from Mahikeng Mall to Mahikeng Market Square where sighted people will be blindfolded to experience everyday lives of people living with blindness.
