Deputy Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams on Film and Television Production Skills Programme

Building skills for a digital future – 35 Western Cape learners graduate with a National Certificate in Film & Television Production

The Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, today recognised the stellar achievements of 35 Western Cape learners who successfully completed the Film and Television Production Skills Programme.

The learners, mostly from Lusaka and KTC areas in Nyanga, outclassed their Gauteng and Eastern Cape counterparts by achieving an 88% pass rate in the programme. These learners, will have an opportunity to be considered for employment or freelance opportunities in various media and communication agencies.

During her 2015 Budget Vote, the Deputy Minister committed to train young people on online video software. This commitment was realised through a partnership with MICT SETA and Atos, who then developed this six-month skills programme, an NQF level 5 qualification.

The programme comprised of four modules being; communication, sound, camera and online video editing.

As the country gears up for digital television migration, the Deputy Minister acknowledged that she is particularly zealous about enabling youth from rural and disadvantaged communities to be part of the digital age and providing them with skills in media production is a step towards achieving this quest.

Speaking at the Western Cape Graduation ceremony, the Deputy Minister said that going forward, the programme will be extended to include animation, which is a scarce skill in the industry.

The skills acquired from this programme will further open up placement opportunities for the learners.

“In partnership with software developer Forbidden, we are able to offer a total of 50 placements and 15 of these will be awarded to the highest achievers from the Western Cape,” announced Atos representative, Nick Green.

Relaying the vote of thanks on behalf of the learners, top learner Themba Monethi expressed their appreciation for the programme as it will enable them to be employed or start up their own businesses.

The graduation ceremony was attended by community leaders, Members of the Provincial Legislature and parents who all united in acknowledging the Department’s efforts in upskilling unemployed youth and thus sowing a seed into their future.

In its pilot phase, the programme was rolled out in Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. The 2017 intake is envisaged to be extended to all other provinces.
