Minister Naledi Pandor launches Operation Phakisa Oceans Economy Initiative, 29 Jan

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will on Friday, 29 January, in Cape Town, launch the South African Marine Research and Exploration Forum (SAMREF), an initiative to exploit research opportunities in offshore oil and gas exploration in South Africa.

The SAMREF is being established under government's Operation Phakisa Oceans Economy initiative, which has the potential to contribute R177bn to SA's gross domestic product and create just over one million jobs by 2033.

The Department of Science and Technology and the Offshore Petroleum Association of South Africa (OPASA) will sign an agreement to establish SAMREF. The Forum will establish partnerships around oil and gas exploration research, enhancing cooperation between the public and private sector, and improving the exchange of information and data on a voluntary basis between all stakeholders.

The Minister will sign the agreement with the OPASA Chair, Mr Sean Lunn.
