Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula honours women military veterans, 29 Aug

In commemoration of Women’s Month, the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, will honour women military veterans and struggle veterans from across the Nelson Mandela Metro on the 29th of August 2015.

Approximately 500 women military veterans and struggle stalwarts will be attending this momentous occasion. The event will recognise the sacrifices and role played by women in the struggle for freedom and equality. The group will include women from both statutory and non-statutory forces.

In order to align with the vision of the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Minister Mapisa-Nqakula, “to take the defence force to the people” the Department will also, on this day, hold a career exhibition. The main objective of the career exhibition is to showcase career opportunities within the defence force, which the expected 1 000 students from schools in and around Port Elizabeth may be encouraged to pursue after matric.

Among the guests of honour attending the celebration will be the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Mr Danny Jordaan; recently appointed CEO of state arms procurement company Armscor, Mr Kevin Wakeford; the entire apex leadership of the Department of Defence and Military Veterans; leadership of civic organisations and religious organisations from across the metro.

As a token of appreciation, all 500 women military and struggle veterans will receive blankets and various gifts from the Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans. This symbolic ceremony will be officiated by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. The main objective of the blanket handover ceremony will be to serve as a reminder to every woman that will be honoured on the day that their contribution to the liberation struggle was not in vain and that it shall never be forgotten. Malibongwe!
