Minister Muthambi addresses Labour Relations Practitioners Forum

Public Service and Administration Minister, Faith Muthambi will tomorrow, Wednesday, 28 June 2017, deliver a keynote address at the Labour Relations Practitioners Forum at Royal Hotel in Durban.

As the country marked the 62nd anniversary of the Freedom Charter which was adopted on June 26, 1955, Minister Muthambi said: “We’ve not yet exhausted the Freedom Charter, therefore, we expect our labour relations practitioners to be guided by the charter so that they can render sound labour relations to minimise conflict, improve service delivery, maintain good and fair labour relations practices in the public service so that our people can enjoy the continued relevance of the Freedom Charter.”

The Freedom Charter was the statement of core principles of the South African Congress Alliance, which consisted of the African National Congress and its allies; the South African Indian Congress, the South African Congress of Democrats and the Coloured People's Congress. It is characterised by its opening demand; The People Shall Govern!

When a collective bargaining agreement is up for negotiation, it is labour relations practitioners who prepare information and make recommendations for management to use during union negotiations.

This consultative role requires that labour relations practitioners have up-to-date information about the economy and market rate pay.

Muthambi said: “South Africa needs labour relations practitioners with extensive knowledge of labour laws and approaches. We need labour relations practitioners who are familiar with current trends in collective bargaining agreements and competitive benefits and work rules.”
