Minister Jeff Radebe launches Youth Month in Soweto, 1 Jun

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa invites members of the media to the launch of Youth Month on Wednesday, 01 June 2016 at the Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum in Soweto, Johannesburg. Activities for the month of June will be outlined at the launch.

Minister Mthethwa will join Minister Radebe and other dignitaries for the laying of wreaths at the Memorial in honour of those who fought for the liberation of South Africa.

The 2016 June Youth Month will be commemorated under the theme: Youth Moving South Africa Forward and commemorates 40 years since the June 16 1976 Soweto uprising when hundreds of young people protested against the apartheid government and their imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. It was on this day that  hundreds of young people lost their lives in the struggle for the liberation, which started a revolt that spread to other parts of country crafting today a South Africa that is democratic, non-racist, non-sexist and belonging to all who live in it.

The programme for Youth Month will entail a month long of activities aimed at highlighting the work of the government in providing opportunities for the youth, educating young people about their history and heritage, communicating opportunities brought by the democratic government, while having conversations with the youth on their role towards social cohesion and nation-building.

16 June Youth Day commemorations will take place at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
