Minister Mildred Oliphant officiates certification ceremony of 47 learners funded by UIF, 27 Feb

The Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant, will officiate the certification ceremony of 47 learners that have completed a 12-month Civil Construction learnership at the Coastal TVET College in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal.

The learners were former contributors to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) as workers, but they lost their jobs. The learners were funded through the Department’s Labour Activation Programme (LAP) administered by UIF. They have completed the learnership which included four months theoretical and eight months practical work. The learnership is accredited by the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) at level 3.

LAP funded the College with R 1.8 million to train the learners with the aim of re-skilling and up-skilling them so they can participate in the competitive labour market or venture into starting their own businesses.

Already, some of the participants have used their new skills to start their own construction companies which are already operating while others have found jobs.
