Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Michael Masutha convenes Youth Summits to advance youth empowerment Through Corrections

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Hon. Adv. Michael Masutha, will convene the first Correctional Youth Summit at Enseleni, Richards Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday (19 March 2016), as part of a series of youth summits to be hosted across the country.

The summit is intended to explore ways of keeping young people away from crime and offending behaviour, by tapping into developmental opportunities in the area through collaborative programmes between the Department of Correctional Services, the City of uMhlathuze, other government departments, the private sector and civil society. The Minister will be hosted by the Honourable Mayor of the City of uMhlathuze, Cllr MG Mhlongo.

Through this initiative, Minister Masutha will engage directly with young people all over South Africa especially those at risk of ending up in correctional facilities due to poverty, unemployment and lack of economic emancipation.

The Minister is expected to highlight how young people, who make up the largest segment of the inmate/offender population, can avert the criminal route to meet their material interests, and, furthermore, find innovative ways of utilising the resources available at correctional facilities to advance a local developmental agenda.

Media is invited to join the Minister as follows:

Date: Saturday, 19 March 2016
