Minister Nkoana-Mashabane arrives in Beijing for the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane arrived in Beijing, People's Republic of China, last night, 17 June 2017, where she will participate in the meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations, hosted by the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Wang Yi.

The People’s Republic of China assumed the rotational chairship of the BRICS Forum for 2017 on 01 January and will hand-over the chairship to South Africa on 01 January 2018.

It is expected that the meeting will focus on issues of shared global political and economic concern and deliberate on how the BRICS Forum can be strengthened to adequately respond to these.

It is further expected that the meeting will seek to promote the deepening of economic cooperation and interaction, especially in the areas of trade and investment. The meeting will also seek ways to support the further strengthening of people-to-people cooperation in such spheres as education, culture and sports.

South Africa regards the BRICS Forum as providing a platform for the realisation of its vision of intensifying development, integration and industrialisation through partnership with other emerging markets and developing countries.

The BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/International Relations will meet again as per the established BRICS practice on the margins of UNGA 72 in New York in September 2017.
