Minister Gugile Nkwinti awards financial compensation for land restitution in Pretoria, 17 Feb

Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Gugile Nkwinti will host a ceremony by the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights to hand over financial compensation awards amounting to 8.4 million rand to land restitution beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries consist of 8 families that were dispossessed of land situated in Gauteng farm lands located in the east of Pretoria, Ekurhuleni, Diepsloot and Sedibeng.

The common thread of the dispossession was sudden eviction without warning from land owners supported by past land laws and practices. In the instance of the Madiba family, the apartheid government sprayed chemicals over their property unannounced, which resulted in the death of their livestock within hours.

That was followed by forceful eviction by government agents that bulldozed and destroyed their property and crops. The land in question is now part of the Wonderboom military base located in Tshwane making land restoration unfeasible.

The ceremony will be held under the theme of “Reversing the legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act”.
