Minister Edna Molewa hands over Waste Recycling Buy Back Centre in Mohlakeng, 19 May

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa will on Friday, 19 May 2017 officially hand over the Mohlakeng Waste Recycling Buy Back Centre in Mohlakeng, Randfontein.

The R7 million project is the third waste management-related project to be undertaken in Mohlakeng. The Buy Back Centre was funded through the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Environmental Protection and Infrastructure Programme’s Working on Waste initiative.

The Minister had in 2015 participated in a clean-up campaign in Mohlakeng.  In 2016, Minister Molewa launched the R30 million Youth Jobs in Waste programme in the area.  The Waste Recycling Buy Back Centre is the third instalment of development initiatives in Randfontein.   

The infrastructure development and upgrades at the Mohlakeng Buy Back centre addresses the challenges relating to waste management, unlocking the economic potential of the informal waste sector, strengthening local municipality on waste management, job creation and skills development.
