MEC Albert Fritz launches “Express Yourself Youth Canvas” as part of Youth Month

Youth Month: ‘Express Yourself Youth Canvas’ launched by Minister Fritz

As part of our Youth Month commemorations, the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, launched the “Express Yourself Youth Canvas” in Cape Town.

The Youth Canvas is a large art canvas measuring 2 meters in height and 5 meters wide. Minister Fritz was joined by youth interns working within the Department (Premiers Advancement of Youth project and EPWP interns), and youth from our NGO partners.

At the launch, young people from the public took the opportunity to paint, draw, write and pin photos on it, as an act of expression.

We will continue to avail the Youth Canvas for the remainder of Youth Month. It will be placed at various locations where young people frequent, such as malls, colleges and universities and other public spaces, across the province.

Guided by the Provincial Strategic Goals (PSG), specifically PSG 2, which calls on us to improve education outcomes and opportunities for youth development, and the Provincial Youth Development Strategy, we continue to support the provinces 2.1 million young people.

We have allocated R15.6 million this financial year to youth services, with a focus on rolling out our innovative Youth Cafés. In his address, Minister Fritz revealed that the Department would be launching the provinces seventh Youth Café in Groot Brak River (Mossel Bay), and relaunching the Mitchells Plain Youth Café at the end of the month.

“This Youth Canvas will give voice to young people across the province, but it is our delivery of Youth Cafés and other services that’ll give them real opportunity and hope”, said Minister Fritz.
