Premier Willies Mchunu on efforts to end political related killings in KwaZulu-Natal

Madiba brought peace to KZN - Moerane Commission of Inquiry to resume sittings

"Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end."

These are the words of former President of the Republic South Africa Nelson Mandela whose life will be celebrated this week.

Indeed as guided by the wise words of Tata Madiba, KZN Premier Willies Mchunu and members of the executive council are doubling their efforts aimed at ending political related killings and ensure a climate of peace and stability prevails in all corners of the province.

Mchunu remarked: “We have implored law enforcement agencies to be firm and act decisively to root out rogue elements that are behind political related killings. There is a team of experts attached to the Hawks that has been assembled to investigate all these cases. Resources have been allocated to ensure intelligence gathering. The team is utilizing Digital Forensic Laboratory to analyze cellphone records and CCTV footage.”

“Importantly, we are very hopeful that peace will triumph over hatred. We are also confident that the spirit of Madiba will inspire the people of this province to unite and rise up to defend the climate of peace that has been prevailing over the years.”

He emphasized: “The Moerane Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate all political related killings will resume its work this week starting from the 17th July until the 21st July. Possible visits and sittings of the commission in places that have recently experienced killings of councillors is being explored. These includes UMzimkhulu and Richmond to name but two.  We need to remind the people of this province that Madiba brought peace and stability to this province. He stood for justice, forgiveness and reconciliation.”

Mchunu further added: “KZN will always be be linked with the story of Nelson Mandela with three pivotal sites located in the province. One of these locations is Manaye Hall in Imbali Township in Pietermaritzburg, where in 1961 Mandela made his last speech as a free man during the All-In-Africa Conference. The second is the Mandela Capture site outside Howick, where Mandela was arrested on the 5th August 1962. And the third is Ohlange High School in Inanda, - Durban where Mandela cast his vote in the first democratic elections in 1994.”

“The people of this province are encouraged to visit these sites to draw inspiration from the spirit of Madiba. In addition, members of the executive council will visit district municipalities as Champions of Sukuma Sakhe to celebrate his life on the 18th July with communities across all racial lines.”
