The launch of the National Elections results centre signals our readiness for the coming elections

Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Honourable Des van Rooyen, accompanied by honourable Deputy Minister Andries Nel, attended the official launch of the National Results Operations Centre in Tshwane on 27 July 2016.

The launch of the results centre is a milestone in the process to deliver free and fair elections. These elections will be the biggest in the country’s history and will signal a watershed moment.

Within the backdrop of the 20th anniversary of the South African Constitution, there is nothing better that indicates that this important document of our people is working than the coming local government elections.

The IEC’s preparations towards hosting yet another successful local government elections are welcomed. It will be the IEC’s task to ensure that next week 23,6 million registered voters across the country are able to exercise their democratic right to vote for the leadership of their choice.

“As a proud nation, we urge all South Africans to contribute to strengthening our democracy that is viable and sustainable. Hence the importance of all joining hands with the IEC to ensure the safe, incident free and fair elections, it is all our responsibility,” said Minister van Rooyen.

For the first time in our history, this election will see 200 political parties and over 61 000 candidates participating, which reflects the maturity of our democracy that continues to reflect the will of the people. This maturity is also be reflected through the conducive environment that is created not only by government, but by all stakeholders including candidates, political parties and communities in general.

We are encouraged by the IEC’s and other stakeholder’s commitment to ensure that all South Africans to have an opportunity cast their vote.

As government we continue to recognise and thank all stakeholders who are committed to ensuring we are able to deliver another successful municipal election that further strengthens our democracy.

Political parties and candidates have crisscrossed the country canvassing for the support of communities. On 3 August 2016, it will be time for “YOU” the over 26 million registered voters to have your say.

“The adherence to the rule of law in the elections period and beyond is important to ensure that there is a conducive environment for an election to take place. Government calls on all stakeholders to work together to ensure that all people act within the framework of the law.

As government we are confident that we will have a peaceful local government elections that will allow communities to make their choice in a peaceful environment,” said Deputy Minister Nel.

South Africa is a democratic country and the right of freedom of movement is enshrined in the Constitution of our country. We remind all South Africans that in South Africa we don’t have “no-go” areas – voting will happen everywhere in the country without fear or intimidation.

Citizens are encouraged to report any incidents of intimidation at their nearest police station or by calling 10111.

Remember, local government is in your hands and together we can strengthen our democracy by voting in the coming elections.
