KwaZulu-Natal Province on death of driver, Bongani Maduna

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government is experiencing yet again the tragic loss of a valuable civil servant who distinguished himself amongst many through his humbleness and exceptional professionalism.

It is with deep sadness that we received the news of the untimely death of Bongani Maduna, the main driver of Sihle Zikalala, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and Leader of Government Business.

A back-up vehicle for Zikalala, the acting premier, travelling towards Empangeni, +- 200 meters before Nseleni off-ramp on the N2, overturned resulting in the death of Maduna. The South African Police Service indicate that slippery road conditions at night played a factor in this fatal crash. Paramedics who arrived on the scene worked throughout the night to save the life of Sgt Kwenu Mabaso who is in a stable condition.

Zikalala and his security detail had just finished visits to schools in various parts of Umkhanyakude District as part of schools monitoring and functioning programme involving all members of the executive and members of the legislature.

This loss is felt very deeply in particular by the children and the wife whom he has just married. Maduna, had just bought a house recently and was highly loved by his family because of his compassion and dedication to his family.

No amount of words can express our deepest sympathies to the family for the pain and irreparable loss of a husband, a son and an uncle and a source of love that united Maduna family.

Members of the executive council and all categories of staff across all government departments wish to express their deepest condolences to the wife, the children and the entire Maduna family.

Importantly, members of the executive council and government employees are setting aside time to visit the family to offer comfort during this difficult period.
