Justice Department welcomes the conviction of Dawie Kriel for racial remarks against Hindus

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD) welcomes the conviction of Dawie Kriel by the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday with the hope that when the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill is passed into law severe sentences will be handed by the judiciary.
Kriel posted a message insulting Hindus on Facebook in October last year calling them “devil disciples” for setting off fireworks during the Diwali festival. The Department strongly condemns this behaviour and calls on people to fight racism.
The Department remains committed to a South Africa which is free from racism, a society in which each person’s dignity is equally valued and respected. Together with our social partners we can heal the divisions of the past through affirmation and redress to unite all South Africans.
