Mpumalanga embarks on illegal dumping awareness campaign in Mbombela, 2 Dec

Mobilisation of communities against illegal waste dumps

Illegal dumping that leads to environmental pollution exposes communities to an unhealthy environment. Decomposed material, toxic wastes and unhealthy odours is occasionally carried to water streams by heavy rains thus polluting rivers and dams. This has a potential threat towards the provision of clean and quality water.

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA), Water and Sanitation and the City of Mbombela embarks on an awareness campaign to stop illegal dumping under the theme: “Eradicating Illegal Dumps”. The campaign seeks to achieve the following objectives:

  • To create and raise awareness on waste management in general and the hazards of illegal dumping;
  • To promote the Recycling Economy and practice how to incorporate the informal sector in waste recycling;
  • To set a platform  for the effective implementation of the Waste Act by the three spheres of government, the community and private sector partners.

The cleaning campaign is scheduled as follows:
Date: 2 December 2016
Venue: Luphisi Community Hall, City of Mbombela
Time: 9h00

The media is invited.
