The awards encourage all stakeholders in the sector to respond systematically and foster the entrenchment of spatial patterns across all geographic scales that exercabate social inequality and economic efficiency.

In Previous national awards, the province won numerous awards for best informal settlements upgrading (Second Creek), Best Rural (Dutywa) and best social housing projects.

“The Provincial Govan Mbeki awards marks a penultimate period for the department as it gives us an opportunity to assess our progress in delivering quality human settlements development to our people whilst recognising outstanding work of individual contractors, municipalities, projects and human settlements students.

The awards, should therefore continue to adhere and uphold the noble ideas and convictions of the late Govan Mbeki whose contribution to the freedom of this country is impeccable, said MEC for Human Settlements Ms Helen Sauls-August.
