Gauteng Legislature on community health care workers grievances

Gauteng Legislature Speaker intervenes to resolve community health care workers’ grievances

Honourable Speaker, Ntombi Mekgwe and Gauteng MEC for Health, Qedani Mahlangu yesterday (November 30) met with aggrieved community health care workers, who have called for an intervention on several issues affecting them.

On Tuesday, 8 November, Hon. Mekgwe received a memorandum detailing various challenges facing community health care workers across Gauteng regions, who were requesting the Department’s. The Speaker has since been working closely with the complainants and the department to ensure a speedy resolve of challenges presented.

The Legislature can now confirm that within a period of a month, the department, through the MEC’s direct engagement with all concerned parties, has managed to present solutions, which will also ensure the sustainability of the community health care workers’ programme.

This was facilitated through the Legislature’s oversight role on the Gauteng Provincial Government.

GPL will in due course release a formal report detailing the contents of the memorandum and the nature of claims/complaints raised; as well as the intervention process as facilitated by the Speaker together with GPL’s Chairperson of the Health Portfolio Committee: Nompi Nhlapo; and Chairperson of the Petitions Committee: Refilwe Mogale.

The report will further detail resolutions and evidence of service delivery by the department in this regard.

The Gauteng Legislature is committed to serve all citizens as the tribune of the people, and ensures this through actively delivering on its mandates of oversight; public participation; law-making; and cooperative governance.
