Home Affairs on gazetting of Discussion Paper

Gazetting of the Discussion Paper on the repositioning of the Department of Home Affairs

The Discussion Paper on the Repositioning of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) was published today, Friday 19 May 2017, for public comment.

Home Affairs Minister, Prof Hlengiwe Mkhize, has invited interested persons and organisations to submit any substantiated comments or representations by no later than 30 September 2017.

The repositioning programme is meant to ensure the department is able to deliver on its full mandate to empower citizens, enhance national security and enable economic development and efficient government.

The discussion Paper will inform the drafting of a White Paper that will in turn provide a policy framework for future legislation of the department, including an act that defines its purpose in a democratic, sovereign state.

A repositioned department will have professional staff that manages identity and international migration securely, efficiently and humanely.

Explaining reasons for repositioning, the Minister said: “In a highly dynamic, digital world, full of risks and opportunities, the nation needs DHA to be the nerve centre of security and the backbone of the digital platforms their lives will depend on.”

Submissions may be sent to the department through the following addresses:
