Gauteng hosts Sedibeng workshop on geographical naming and renaming process, 12 May

Gauteng tackles geographical naming and renaming process

With a number of applications received to name, rename and/or correct names of some of the geographical featrures/areas around Gauteng, the provincial Geographical Names Committee will host a series of workshops to bring the process up to speed.

The first workshop will be held in Sedibeng on Friday, 12 May 2017.

They (workshops) are meant to capacitate local councils to effect guidelines on how to implement the naming/renaming process including stakeholder consultations. They are also aimed at educating communities and interest groups on how to participate in the process as part of transforming the province.

Says MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko: “The process of naming and renaming of entities and geographical features begun in earnest with the advent of democracy in 1994. This was done with a view to forge nation building, reclaiming history and overcoming colonial notions.

It is an ongoing process that needs to be speeded-up as part of achieving social cohesion and transformation”.

The event will take place as follows:

Date: Friday, 12 May 2017
Time: 8h30
Venue: Vaal Teknorama Museum, Vereeniging
