Gauteng Provincial Legislature launches 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, 25 Nov

As part of its year plan the Gauteng Provincial Legislature joins the rest of Gauteng, South Africa and the globe in holding various awareness campaigns on challenges that pertain to the protection of human rights – particularly vulnerable groups, which include women, children, the youth, the elderly, the LGBTI community, and others.

Running from the 25 November until 10 December 2015, the campaign is a period during which Citizens of the world are called to take action and fight against the violence and abuse of women, children and all other vulnerable groups in society. It is a time to remind each other of the daily responsibility we have as Citizens to root out all gender-based abuse and discrimination. GPL will officially launch its 16 Days of Activism campaign on 25 November, followed by several programmes which will be implemented throughout the period, targeting affected and vulnerable communities around the province.

The launch will take place as follows:

Date:  Wednesday, 25 November 2015
Time: 08h30
Venue:Public Forum, Gauteng Provincial Legislature (Main Building); Cnr. City Hall & President Streets - JHB

Following the launch, GPL will conduct an oversight visit and door to door outreach campaign at an informal settlement in Eikenhoff. This activity will be led by the GPL Multi-Party Women Caucus in partnership with the Voter Education Campaign and the IEC. The campaign will focus on homes cared for by the elderly, women, and child-headed homes in a squatter camp. Participating residents will be provided with food parcels, plant seeds, health screening, gardening tools and social services as well as safety support.

GPL is partnering with various relevant Departments including Home Affairs, Social Development, Community Safety and Health who will provide basic mobile screening services.

The oversight visit and door to door outreach will take place as follows:

Date: Friday, 27 November 2015
Time: 10:00
Venue: Jacksons Informal Settlement in Eikenhoff

Members of the media are invited to attend these two sessions.
