Gauteng Gears Up for the Colourful Africa Day Street Parade 

Gauteng will be a hype of activity and a blast of colour, music and dance when the Afrocentric (street Jamboree) Parade takes to the streets of Yeoville this Saturday 27 May, 2017 to mark the end of the Africa Week celebrations.

The parade is part of Africa Day celebrations held every 25 May, observed by Africans throughout the continent and the Diaspora to celebrate the formation of the AOU now AU which ushered in a new chapter for Africans to collectively begin to address their own challenges.

Organized under the theme “A Year of OR Tambo: Building a Better Africa and a Better World”, the Gauteng event is organized through partnership between the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation; African Diaspora Forum and Carnival Company among others.

The provincial programme which began on 13 May, is a multicultural event aimed at bringing Africans together in celebrating their diversity and heritage. It is also aimed at promoting human rights and social cohesion, including combating various from of discrimination.

Says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko: The Afrocentric Parade aims to bring together Africans and people from around the world in appreciating the richness of Africa… its soul, culture, beauty, languages, indigenous knowledge and diversity of this rich continent”.

“We believe, Gauteng as one of the leading cosmopolitan areas with its diverse cultures is well positioned to show Africa the way to a united continent”, concluded MEC Mazibuko.

The parade will include troupes and cultural groups from/representing countries including South Africa, Kenya, Cameroon, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethopia and more.
