Transport hosts various Easter Road Safety events, 14 to 17 Apr

Members of the media are invited to join the Minister of Transport, Mr Joe Maswanganyi, and the Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga to various law enforcement activations that will be taking place in various places of our country.

On Friday, 14 April 2017, pilgrims will mark the beginning of Passover and Monday, 17 April 2017 is a holiday following the Easter weekend. Thousands of pilgrims and holiday makers will be travelling to attend church service and travelling to different holiday destinations during this period.

Thousands of vehicles ferrying passengers are expected to pass on different major routes. These routes include the following:

R573 (Moloto Road), N1 (Laingsburg - Cape Town), N1 (Tshwane - Polokwane), N1 (Johannesburg - Bloemfontein), N2 (Mthatha - Port Elizabeth), N3 (Johannesburg - Durban), N4 (Tshwane - Lebombo border), N5 (Winburg - Harrismith), N6 (Bloemfontein - East London), N14 (Klerksdorp - Kimberly), N11 (Middleburg - Groblersdal), N12 (Klerksdorp - Wolmaranstad), R61 (Beaufort west - Mthatha), R30 (Bloemfontein, Klerksdorp and Ventersdorp), R80 (Mabobane - Tswhane), R378 (Vryburg), R101 (Hammanskraal - Polokwane), alternative route to N1.

According to road safety statistics, major routes in the country have been characterized by fatal crashes during the Easter period. Human errors and factors are major contributors.

Our law enforcement officers will ensure that there’s high visibility of law enforcement operations and road safety education and awareness on these routes.

Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikhunga

  • Kranskop Toll Plaza on N1 (Time: 12pm on 13 April 2017)
  • Oshoek Plaza in Mpumalanga (Time: 14h00 on 14 April 2017)
  • Marian Hill Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal (Time: 14h00 on 16 April 2017)
  • Ultra City, Escourt in KwaZulu-Natal (Time: 12h00 on 17 April 2017)

Road crashes are a burden to South Africa as they cause the country the country R143 billion in terms of repairs, health insurance, funeral costs.

South Africa has a total of 12, 2 million registered vehicles, 309 768 registered taxis and 61 841 registered buses. The number of licensed drivers is 12, 2 million.
