Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announces benefits for Africa’s public health, 6 Oct

Dr Motsoaledi and Ms Li Bin to make an important announcement

The South African Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and the Chinese Health Minister Ms Li Bin are to make an important announcement that will benefit public health in Africa. This announcement will be made following the 2nd Ministerial Forum of China-Africa Health Development taking place in Cape Town between 4 and 6 October, 2015.

The meeting is attended by Ministers in charge of health affairs in China and African countries, as well as representatives from African Union, World Health Organisation (WHO), UNAIDS,UNICEF, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), World Bank, The Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, and Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI).

Under the theme “Promoting the access of healthcare service in Africa: Improving China-Africa’s Cooperation in Public Health in post-Ebola era”,  China and African countries agreed to strengthen collaboration around universal health coverage (UHC); including but not restrained by access to high-quality, essential commodities, medicines and vaccines; taking actions against preventable communicable diseases and emerging diseases such as; Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) prevention and control; HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria; adoption of innovation, information and communications technology (ICT) for health; building regional disease surveillance system, enhancing the use of traditional medicines, public private partnerships, and emphasising the importance of addressing substandard drugs and commodities.

They reaffirmed their commitment to work with all partners to make resources and solutions available to address major causes of child mortality, its risk factors nutrition and poor water sanitation and hygiene and other preventable diseases. The announcement will help to identify African and international partners for potential joint projects with China and facilitated in-depth dialogue.
