Good afternoon

We salute Joe Mafela for the immense contribution he has made in the arts and creative industry. Joe was a multitalented and multilingual artist/actor who gave his all on stage singing, on television comedy and drama

He grew rapidly in this sector having been on our television screens for more than three decades. It was by no mistake that when he met his untimely death he was already playing in one of the best soapies in South Africa, Generations.

Bra Joe, Sdumo, Mr Sgudi Snaysi as he was affectionately known by his fans played a critical role during the establishment of the Arts and Culture’s Living Legends Legacy programme. He was instrumental in shaping young actors and actresses.

We meet here today to bid farewell to the Tshwane School of Music as they will be embarking on their journey of cultural collaborations to the State of Kuwait.

This is in response to the invitation from the South African Embassy in Kuwait and the National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters which is the Ministry of Culture in Kuwait. This year they are celebrating Kuwait as the Islamic Capital of Youth. The State of Kuwait will cover all your travel costs.

Last year, in October, I visited Kuwait for heritage celebrations and strengthening cultural collaborations. I was accompanied by crafters, visual artists and Joe Nina.

They requested that I bring youth groups in 2017 as they will be celebrating youth. Hence I have recommended Tshwane School of Music as one of the groups that will visit Kuwait and perform.

Go there and proudly raise the South African flag with pride. Your participation at Kuwait the Islamic Capital of Youth in 2017 further strengthen cultural relations between South Africa and Kuwait as we promote greater people to people contact and deepen our bonds of friendship and solidarity.

South Africa and Kuwait enjoys cordial and reciprocal bilateral relations. The ties between the two countries were further strengthened by Kuwait initiating the formalisation of relations by proposing the signing of a Cultural Agreement.

Both countries are fully committed to promoting mutually beneficial cooperation in the fields of arts, culture and heritage for developing activities, programmes and projects for cultural and artistic exchange.

I have no doubt that you will enjoy this journey.

I thank you.
