Deputy Minister Bheki Cele hosts Imbizo Outreach Programme at Los-My-Cherry as part of Youth Month, 19 Jun

The Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries General Bheki Cele together with the MEC for Rural Environment and Agricultural Development (READ), Manketsi Tlhape invite members of the media to a feedback and Imbizo Outreach Programme to be held at Los-My-Cherry (Welgeval) in the North West Province.

The Deputy Minister visited the area last year and promised to return to the area. As part of commemorating Youth Month, the Deputy Minister is set to engage the youth as part of a public participation programme, and continuing with Career Expo’s which have been running since 02 June 2017. The last leg of all the expos will be held in Mpumalanga, Hazyview on Thursday, 15 June 2017.

The theme is “Together we move South Africa forward: Our Future – Make it work.” The Deputy Minister General Bheki Cele aims to provide a progress report and feedback on the commitment made during the 29 February 2016 imbizo.

He will also engage with the youth as to inform them about opportunities and programmes they can benefit from; that are offered by the department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries.

DAFF reprioritised R263 million following the reprioritisation of the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP) and Ilima/Letsema in the 2015/16 financial year. The North West province was allocated R33, 9 million from the reprioritised CASP fund.

The 12 000 small scale farmers each benefited four bags of drought pellets. Twenty six farmers of Los-my-cherry and 13 of Obakeng villages were beneficiaries.

A Community Garden was established in Obakeng village and an existing vegetable garden was identified for revitalisation with the following plans of action arranged by the local Provincial Department of Agriculture:

  • Revitalisation of a borehole
  • Water reticulation
  • Provision of water tank and stand
  • Establishment of drip irrigation system

All of the above were finalised with the Deputy Minister General Bheki Cele furthermore committing to supply 400 citrus trees for allocation of two per her household to encourage families to grow their own plantations.

Moreover, the Deputy Minister General Bheki Cele will visit a project in the area of Los-My-Cherry to see how farmers are coping in their respective sectors.
