Deputy Minister Barbara Thomson hands over Kia bakkie to Songimvelo Recycler, 22 Apr

Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Barbara Thomson will, on 22 April 2017, handover a Kia bakkie to representatives of Songimvelo Recyclers in Msunduzi, KwaZulu-Natal.

Songimvelo Recyclers have played a role in cleaning the streets of Msunduzi by collecting recyclable material and disposing of it at landfill sites as a livelihood. They have in the past used public transport whilst operating their entrepreneurial business which has provided permanent employment for two individuals.

Songimvelo Recyclers have conducted waste management awareness in 49 schools within the Msunduzi district and has hosted 4 clean-up events within the district. This joint venture between the Department of Public Service and Administration and the Department of Environmental Affairs has developed into a key partnership as the DPSA is now considering up scaling this programme as it clearly positively impacts on service delivery, job creation and a “better life for all” as prioritised by Government.
