North West Rural Environment and Agricultural Development celebrates African World Heritage Day, 5 to 6 May

The Department of Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development (North West) in partnership with the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Free State) as well as the NW 405 Municipality will host 2017 Africa World Heritage Celebration in Venterskroon Inn in the Vredefort Dome Heritage Site.

Hosted under the theme: “The Role of Heritage in Tourism”, the African World Heritage Day celebration aims to increase global awareness of African Heritage and to mobilise enhanced cooperation for its safeguarding. The African World Heritage was proclaimed in November 2015 by the General Conference United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a day when African Heritage must be celebrated worldwide in appreciation of Africa’ s most precious resources. The North West Province will celebrate this day as a build up campaign to the World Heritage celebrations hosted annually during September month.

As part of promoting social cohesion and unity in diversity, the celebrations will include the following significant activities:

  • A special Educational Tour for the learners of Mponeng Primary School in the Venterskroon;
  • A dialogue on the importance of protecting the site at the Taung Skull; and
  • A diverse group of youth from neighbouring schools in the Tlokwe and Ngwathe Local Municipalities will be taken on one of the hiking trails in the Vredefort Dome.
