 Arts and Culture to lead Mandela Day Celebrations in honor of his Legacy

The Department of Arts and Culture in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Museum and the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture invite members of the media to the Nelson Mandela Day Celebrations on 18 July 2017 in recognition of his values, legacy of humanitarian acts, voluntary initiatives, culture of peace and freedom.

The event will take place at the Nelson Mandela Museum, Bhunga Building, in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province. On this day, people everywhere are encouraged to give 67 minutes of their time to do good for others.

As part of the this year’s Mandela Day programme, the Nelson Mandela Museum in partnership with the British American Tobacco Company (BATC) will officially unveil Mandela Legacy Canvas which was bought by BATC from a fundraising auction in 2011.

The canvass will be officially handed over to the museum by the Head of External Affairs for British American Tobacco South Africa, Mr. Joe Heshu for permanent exhibiting at the Nelson Mandela Museum.

Later in the evening, Department of Arts and Culture in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Museum will host a dialogue under theme, ‘Critical Reflections on the Legacies of Nelson Mandela and O.R.Tambo’ , as part of celebrating the lives of two Human rights activities and ANC presidents to close-off the day.

The speakers for the dialogue are Professor Balintulo who will be looking on Africa through the eyes of Tambo and Mandela, Dr Buhlungu on locating Tambo and Mandela values within the Liberation Struggle, Dr Bam on the Meaning of Tambo and Mandela.

The occasion will be embraced by the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Phumulo Masualle; Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa; Minister of Finance Malusi Gigaba, Eastern Cape MEC for Sport Recreation Arts and Culture, Pemmy Majodina and the Department of Water and Sanitation, Deputy Minister, Pamela Tshwete.
