Arts and Culture Hosts Africa Month Colloquium in Bloemfontein
The Department of Arts and Culture will host a colloquium on “Pan-Africanism: AU Agenda 2063: Rise Africa Rise” at the War Museum in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, 30 May 2017. This is part of the overall theme of “The Year of OR Tambo: Building a Better Africa and a Better World”.
The colloquium is part of series of colloquia conducted by the department around the country in celebration of Africa Month. A panel chaired by Prof Kole Omotoso (author and literary academic) comprising of leading minds in the country and the continent, namely Prof Horace Campbell (scholar of Pan-Africanism and academic from the Kwame Nkrumah Institute in Ghana), Mr Odia Ofeimun (poet and public intellectual from Nigeria), and Adv Sipho Manthula (from UNISA and Social Cohesion Advocate) will participate in a roundtable discussion, among others.
At the core of the colloquia programme “Conversations with the continent” has been a focus on decolonization, with emphasis on sustaining inclusive growth; good governance; peace and security; and an Africa that has a strong cultural identity, common heritage and shared values and ethics.
Most importantly for this colloquium, fostering Pan-Africanism is clearly articulated in Agenda 2063. Agenda 2063 seeks to give practical expression to the goal of ensuring that in the foreseeable future, there exists a united and integrated continent. In engendering the spirit of Pan-Africanism, it means that in all our endeavors to making Africa a better place, we ought to look for solace and inspiration from within the continent and not from without. The African Union Agenda 2063 is a roadmap for continental development meant to counter the ravages of many years of colonial oppression and misrule.
