Adjustment of fuel prices effective from 2 Dec 2015

The Department of Energy herewith informs the public about the fuel prices for December 2015. South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted on a monthly basis, informed by international and local factors.

The pump prices for both grades of petrol will increase by 1.0c/l; diesel and the maximum retail price for LPGas will decrease by between 1.8c/l and 4.0c/l, whilst the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin and the single maximum national retail price (SMNRP) will increase by 1.0c/l with effect from 2 December 2015.

The main reasons for these fuel price adjustments are the weakening of the Rand against the US Dollar despite the drop in the prices of all petroleum products during the period under review. In December of each year the Minister of Energy adjusts margins in terms of the fuel pricing regulatory framework.  This year margins at retail, wholesale, storage and distribution have been adjusted overall by 5.8.  The Minister of Energy, Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson, has therefore approved the annual adjustment of the fuel margins with effect from 02 December 2015. The retail margin of petrol will increase by 6.0c/l which equates to a 3.8% increase.  Both the secondary storage and secondary distribution margin for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin will increase by 1.1c/l respectively.  The wholesale margin will remain unchanged with effect from 2 December 2015.

Based on current local, international factors as well as the margin adjustments, the fuel prices for December 2015 in the South African market will be adjusted as follows:

1. Petrol (93 Octane) will increase by 1.00 cents/litre
2. Petrol (95 Octane) will increase by 1.00 cents/litre
3. Diesel (0.05% Sulphur) will decrease by 3.80 cents/ litre.
4. Diesel (0.005% Sulphur) will decrease by 1.80 cents/ litre
5. Illuminating paraffin (SMNRP) will increase by 0.20 cents/litre.
6. Illuminating paraffin (wholesale) will increase by 1.00 cents/litre.
7. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will decrease by 4.00 cents/kilogram.

The pricing schedule for all the pricing zones will be published on Tuesday, 1 December 2015.

The Department of Energy urge motorists and all the households that use paraffin and LPGas to continue to use energy sparingly during these difficult economic conditions.
