Minister to launch 50/50 farm and hand over title deeds to communities in the North West Province

Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Gugile Nkwinti will on Monday 5th December hand over title deeds to five Bahurutshe communities in one of the biggest land claims to be settled at Motsane Game Farm outside Zeerust in the North West Province.

In the title deeds handover, more than fifty four thousand (54 280) hectares of land which includes a game farm is being restored to the Bahurutshe community who were disposed of their land around 1936 following the passing of the Development Trust Act by the previous government.

The Commission on Restitution of Land Rights purchased the properties on behalf of the Bahurutshe for more than four hundred and sixty five million (R465, 326,484.20) benefitting a total of 1878 households.

The Minister will on the same day (5th December 2016) launch the first pilot project of the Policy Framework on Strengthening the Relative Rights of People Working the Land (50/50 policy) for the North West Province at the Stars Away Farm in Ottoshoop, Zeerust.

The launch of the Stars Away farm project follows the conclusion of an agreement which will see farm workers and the farmer become co-owners of the farming enterprise. The Department acquired a stake in both land and the farming business on a 50/50 basis to assist on behalf of the farm workers.
