4th South African Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Conference 2015

The South African Centre for Carbon Capture & Storage (SACCCS), in partnership with the Department of Energy, has announced that the 4th South African Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Conference 2015 will be held on the 20th - 21st October 2015 in Johannesburg. The theme of the Conference is “Capacitating South Africa for CCS”.

Capacitating South Africa for CCS, speaks to the need to build local capacity in CCS in order for the country to successfully implement the Pilot CO2 Storage Project (PCSP). It also refers to the process of stakeholder engagement where SACCCS is engaging with key stakeholders by sharing information on CCS including benefits and potential risks associated with CCS application.

CCS Achievements and Aspirations

On Day 1 of the 4th South African CCS Conference 2015, attendees will hear about the achievements that SACCCS has made since its inception in March 2009 and future plans to implement the CCS Road Map. The Minister of Energy has been invited to open the conference and share in the achievements made by SACCCS so far as well as the aspirations for the future.
Day 1 has been developed with government and industry in mind, including those familiar with CCS (Internationally and nationally) as well as those who are new to the technology.

CCS Research and Capacity Building Capacity in South Africa

To ensure the development of CCS in South Africa, certain technical capabilities are needed. Some of these technical capabilities are not available in South Africa and thus it is prudent to carry out a gap analysis in order to identify where some capacity needs to be built. Also included in day two of the conference will be international CCS experts who can assist in sharing their experiences and propose certain solutions to the gaps identified.

Day 2 has been developed with a focus on the academia and international CCS experts coming together to identify technical gaps and coming up with solutions on how to address them. The academia is important in the capacity building process and their participation in Day 2 will be crucial.

The conference should be attended by:

  • South African government officials who are involved with capacity building initiatives
  • Government officials who are interested on how CCS will impact communities
  • Government Policy and Regulators
  • Local authorities in whose areas the PCSP may be implemented
  • Industry officials who are involved in the CCS project
  • The greater public who would like to find out more about what the country is doing to reduce the threats of climate change
  • NGOs who are involved with climate change issues
  • Students
  • Municipality officials
  • Academia
  • International and local CCS Experts

Venue

The conference will be hosted in Johannesburg. Attendance of the conference is free of charge, however the costs of transport and accommodation will be for the individuals account.
