South African Renewables Initiative

The Department of Energy invites members of the media to join the Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies at the official launch of the South African Renewables Initiative (SARI) during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 17) in Durban on 7 December 2011 at 18h30 for 19h00. The venue for the launch is the historic KwaMuhle Museum on No.130 Bram Fischer Road, formerly (Ordnance), in the COP 17 precinct across the road from the entrance to the CCR Expo. SARI international partners will be present to celebrate the launch of this innovative international financing initiative.

The South African Renewables Initiative (SARI) is a government initiative dedicated to establishing the financing arrangements required for the large-scale development of renewable energy in South Africa. Its larger objective is to ensure energy security, economic growth, climate change and industrial benefits without incurring unacceptable cost burdens to South Africa. The South African government has been working with the governments of the UK, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, and the European Investment Bank to create a partnership that will develop financing arrangements and facilitate technical assistance and collaboration with other governments, regional and international public bodies as well as the private sector.

The International Partnership will be launched with the signing of a Declaration of Intent on December 7th in Durban.
