About registering premises as artificial insemination (AI) and embryo centre

Before you can evaluate, pack, label, store or sell animal genetic material, you must first register your premises as an AI centre.

Your premises must have the following facilities:

  • office and laboratory complexes
  • public entrance
  • public roads and thorough fences
  • stables, pens, crushes and kraals
  • quarantine area
  • reservoir.

The above facilities must be included in your site plan. The ground plan must indicate the measurements and description of:

  • every room that will be used as an office and laboratory, including:
    • evaluating, processing, packing, labelling and storage rooms for genetic material
    • rooms used for cleaning and sterilising equipment
    • cloakrooms and toilets
  • stables, pens, collecting stocks and crushes rooms
  • kraals and barns.

Animals kept on your premises must not have contact with other animals outside the premises. You must put a fence around the premises.

Animals kept in the quarantine areas must not have contact with each other or with other animals on the premises. You must have separate stables and pens used for collecting, keeping, examining and testing genetic material in the quarantine areas. Make sure that effluent does not flow from one quarantine stable or pen to another.

The people working with pigs in a quarantine area must not have contact with other workers in the centre.

There must be enough space in the premises for the animals to exercise.

You must have separate rooms for the following on your premises:

  • administrative activities
  • machines used for evaluating, processing, packing, labelling and storing genetic material
  • cleaning, disinfecting, sterilising and preparation of the equipment used for collecting genetic material.

People collecting genetic material must not have access to the above rooms. You must keep rooms used for collecting, evaluating, packing, labelling and storing genetic material clean at all times.

Floors, walls and ceilings of rooms where genetic material is handled must be cleaned regularly and kept safe for animals.
