Title: Youth invited to participate in ICT internship programme
----------------------------

CALL FOR YOUTH TO PARTICIPATE IN ICT INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

Piloted last year, the Youth Internship Programme (YiP) is set for launch. The programme is geared towards improving the country's information and communications technology skills capacity.

YiP was piloted in June 2002 in Gauteng, with 120 interns who completed internships at six industry organisations. The pilot focused on IT technicians, programming, information systems security, telecommunications installations and business analysis.

The learners achieved a 100% pass rate on all the programmes and, 100% permanent employment opportunities.

Due to its success in the pilot phase, YiP is to be implemented from April 2003 as a one-year programme to Gauteng, Cape Town, Durban, Mpumalanga, Port Elizabeth, East London and the North West. Skills development in the areas of IT technicians, programming, business analysis, project management, information systems security and telecommunications installations will be offered. Emphasis will also be placed on learners with disabilities. Each of the programmes will consist of theory followed by real workplace experience of approximately six months.

Disadvantaged youth between the ages of 18 and 30 years, are invited to apply via two call centres on 0861 120 012, the dti's Customer Contact Centre on 0861 843 384 or via the ISETT web site: www.isett.org.za.

Learners will be asked to provide their details. Information will be collated on a database and sorted according to requirements for each programme.

Other application criteria include:
* Possession of matric certificates
* From a previously disadvantaged group
* Willingness to sign a learnership agreement for no less than 12 months

Learners who are initially selected will be contacted directly and asked to undergo specific aptitude and personality profile testing. Final selections will be made after this process.

The YiP is a public-private partnership between the dti; ISETT SETA and industry organisations formed to address the skills requirements in the ICT industry and is aimed at reducing youth unemployment.

Successful applicants will be contacted no later than 30 June 2003. Applicants that were unsuccessful will remain on the database for possible selection of other programmes or further extensions to the YiP. Applicants NOT contacted by 30 June 2003 should consider themselves unsuccessful.
