STATEMENT ON APPOINTMENT OF NEW MINISTER AND DEPUTY MINISTER

The Presidency is pleased to announce that President Mbeki has appointed a new Minister of Housing and a new Deputy Minister of Arts, Science, Culture and Technology.

Ms Brigitte Mabandla has been appointed Minister of Housing replacing Ms Sankie Mthembi-Mahanyele, who is to take up a position as Deputy Secretary-General of the African National Congress. Ms Mabandla has served as Deputy Minister of Arts, Science, Culture and Technology since 1995.

Ms Buyelwa Sonjica, currently a Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee of Water Affairs and Forestry in the National Assembly, has been appointed Deputy Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology. Ms Sonjica has served in a number of portfolio committees in parliament including arts and culture, finance and trade and industry.

On behalf of the President, Deputy President Zuma congratulates Ms Mabandla and Ms Sonjica, and wishes them well in their new responsibilities.

The new Minister and Deputy Minister will be sworn in at 18h30 this evening, 25 February 2003, at Tuynhuys in Cape Town.
