Mr DA Worth (Democratic Alliance, Free State) to ask the Minister of Basic Education:

Whether all schools in the Free State have access to (a) clean water and (b) sanitation; if not, (i) how many schools do not have access in each case and (ii) what amount has the Free State Department of Education allocated for the medium term expenditure framework period to address the provision of water sanitation?

Reply:

(i) 196 schools without water and 86 schools without sanitation at 28 February 2010 according to National Education Infrastructure Management System (NEIMS). 57 of the 196 schools have been or are in the process to be provided with water and 45 of the 86 schools have been or are in the process to be provided with sanitation facilities.

(ii) An allocation of R30,320 million, R2,420 million is budgeted for sanitation and water respectively in the 2010/11 financial year.
