Occupational Therapy Week

Occupational Therapy Week is celebrated throughout the province with special programmes and events presented by the local occupational therapists for the benefit of the patients, personnel and the public.

At Pelonomi Regional Hospital, the Occupational Therapy (OT) department is participating in the annual OT week which focuses on raising awareness of Occupational therapy services in the community as well as among our co-workers (multi disciplinary team).

The occupational therapists of Pelonomi have compiled a detailed programme for the five days that will achieve the following goals:

* The promotion of occupational therapy within Pelonomi Hospital that will lead to a significant improvement of referrals to occupational therapy by multi-disciplinary team members.
* To raise awareness of occupational therapy within the surrounding community, and
* Upliftment and empowerment of different target groups in the surrounding communities.

This exciting program will include the following activities:

Date: Tuesday, 12 May 2009
Women’s Small Business Day: Teaching of skills e.g. crocheting. A motivational speaker specialising in entrepreneurship will be giving ladies from our local community a talk on entrepreneurship.

Date: Wednesday, 13 May 2009
Trash2Toys: The occupational therapists will be teaching mothers about normal development of their children, as well as how to provide stimulation in all areas of development. They will also be teaching them toy making from scrap material which will provide low cost toys and encourage normal development.

Date: Thursday, 14 May 2009
For the love of children: Organising of a NPO group of young people to perform monthly entertainment in the paediatric ward, in the form of musicals, dramas, etc.

Date: Friday, 15 May 2009
Fun in the Sun: Improvement of the Occupational Therapy Outdoor Treatment area, ending with a social event over lunch with the multi-disciplinary team.
