North West Local Government embraces back-to-basics approach

New Ngaka Modiri Molema Mayor embraces back-to-basics approach

The newly elected Ngaka Modiri Molema district municipality Executive Mayor Tshepo Justice Makolomakwa has announced that the municipality will implement the “Back to Basics” approach which was adopted by the national Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, for municipalities to serve communities better. Executive Mayor Makolomakwa said this during his inaugural speech in the packed council chambers, after he was elected the executive mayor during the first sitting of the council yesterday.

He said “we will work hand in glove with our local municipalities to turn around Ngaka Modiri Molema district municipality to become a better district municipality that serves its people. We will go on a process of rebranding, repositioning and renewal of Ngaka Modiri Molema district to become a destination of choice. That can be achieved if we do not operate like an island but embrace Back to Basics approach, work as a collective and serve our communities as we have taken oath”.

He added that the municipality will implement the Setsokotsane Programme as led by Bokone Bophirima Premier Supra Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo, to expedite service delivery in his district. “Our key objective that we must achieve without fail, is to ensure uninterrupted water supply to our communities. We also need to ensure the filling of potholes, deal with illegal dumping and ensure sanitation projects to our communities. We must create a fertile ground for our local business to thrive and deal with unemployment and grow the economy of our district,” he mentioned.

Meanwhile, with the official installation of the new council of Ngaka Modiri Molema, the Section 139 (1) (c) (of the Constitution) is no longer applicable. However, the Department will continue to support the municipality through Section 154 (of the Constitution).

MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Collen Maine, has assured the council that they are now in full control of the municipality. “Through Section 154 we will continue to support the municipality as the intervention team will remain in the municipality. The Administrator Kulu Nair will also act on the position of a municipal manager. We expect the new council to deal with all issues raised during the intervention without fear of favour. Unity of councillors is key to the noble goal of serving our people,” he said.

Councillor Yoliswa Setshwaro was elected as the Speaker of the council.
