Yawa urges police to intensify efforts and action to reclaim streets from criminals

The success of the fight against crime will not be measured on much talk, but on intensified effort and action to reclaim our streets from criminals in order to safeguard the property and lives of citizens from the threat of crime. This emphasis was made by the newly appointed MEC for Public Safety in the North West, Howard Yawa during the introductory meeting held on Monday afternoon with the top brass of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mafikeng.

"Fighting crime and its causes is one of the five key priorities of our fourth democratic government, we therefore need to strengthen partnerships and work closer with youth, the business sector, farmers, traditional leaders, faith based organisations, community based organisations, crime combating structures and communities in order to overcome the scourge of crime," said Yawa.

MEC Yawa committed to provide greater support to the police in their work and urged management to ensure that every member enjoys their work. He indicated that he would engage with unions organising in the police sector, i.e. Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) and South African Police Union (SAPU) soon. The Provincial Commissioner for SAPS, Lesetja Beetha on behalf of police management pledged to support the MEC in fulfilling the mandate bestowed upon him by the Premier.

MEC Yawa also introduced Mr Obakeng Mongale as the Head of Department redeployed to the provincial Department of Public Safety.
