Minister Michael Masutha launches rationalisation of courts as part of access to justice, 28 Nov

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Michael Masutha, MP, will officially launch the commencement of the rationalising magisterial districts with municipal boundaries as well as the court-annexed mediation services.

Both rationalisation of magisterial districts commences on 1 December 2014 in respect of the Gauteng and North West Provinces. This process will ensure that more people have access to justice services at courts that are located closer to where they live.

For example, in terms of the old magisterial boundaries, the Diepsloot community had to travel to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court to access justice services which is a distance of ± 50 kilometers away. From 1 December 2014 the Diepsloot community will access justice services at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court which is about ± 15km.

The Minister’s address at the launch will give clarity on how these historic reforms will enhance access to justice for local communities and how it will impact on the operations of SAPS and Sheriffs in the affected areas.

The launch will be followed by an Imbizo where community members will have an opportunity to interact with the Minister on justice related issues.
