Minister Cwele to table further proposals on the Protection of Information Bill

State Security Minister, Dr Siyabonga Cwele (MP), will this Friday, 22 October 2010, appear before Parliament’s Adhoc Committee on Protection of Information Bill to provide further briefing on the concerns raised during public hearings on this bill.

This is the second appearance by the Minister to the Committee, following his presentation of 17 September 2010.

He is expected to provide, amongst other things, detailed comments on how the bill could be further improved, this against the backdrop of a continuous debate on the provisions of this bill, which the media and civil society stakeholders have rejected as placing limitations on freedom of expression.

The detailed proposals which the Minister is to make will have to be considered by the Adhoc Committee as it continues to process the bill, in line with its constitutional mandate.

Details of the presentation are as follows:
Date: 22 October (Friday)
Time: 09h00
Venue: Committee Room M46, Ground Floor, Marks Building

A media briefing will follow immediately thereafter at Imbizo Media Centre, 120 Plein Street, Cape Town.

Note: There will be a video link-up to Room 153, Union Buildings, Pretoria.
