- Employed by the Legal Resource Centre in Cape Town as a para-legal practitioner (1985 - 1989).
- Employed by Ngcuka and Matana legal firm as a para-legal practitioner (1989 - 1990).
- Full-time Secretary of the African National Congress (ANC) Women's League for two terms in the Western Cape (1990 - 1993).
- Served as a member of the National Executive of the ANC Women's League (1993).
- Member of Parliament in the National Assembly (1994 - 1999).
- Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Housing (1997 - 1999).
- Appointed Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Housing in Western Cape Provincial Government (2001 - 2004).
- Upon taking her responsiblity as the Deputy Minister, she has been at the forefront of the government's massive campaign of Equal Representation of women in government structures, both in political and administrative arenas- famously known as 50/50 Campaign.
- Within DPLG, she has also been vocal about the eradication of the Bucket System Campaign in all municipalities.
