Invitation to a media briefing aboard the SAS Amatola: Operation Prosper

The South African security forces assisted by other government departments are busy with a maritime borderline patrol of the Republic of South Africa east coast from Cape Agulhas to Kosi Bay.

The operation began on Tuesday, 6 April 2010 and will be finalised on Friday, 30 April 2010 and the objective is to enforce legislation along the Republic of South Africa coastline, which is of strategic importance to the country, both as an economic area and as a transportation route.

The South African Navy frigate, the SAS Amatola, will be alongside the port of Durban over the weekend Friday, 16 April to Sunday, 18 April 2010. She will be accompanied by a marine and coastal management vessel which is assisting with the operation, the Lilian Ngoyi.

Various members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and members of the intelligence agencies, as well as customs officials from the South African Revenue Service (SARS); representatives of the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries are on board the SAS Amatola and the Lilian Ngoyi in this inter-departmental law enforcement project.

A South African Air Force Lynx helicopter is lending aerial assistance in locating and identifying vessels to board. This is one of the joint security related exercises being conducted in the run up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Members of the media are cordially invited to a news briefing, giving an update on the operation on Saturday, 17 April 2010 at 11h00, Aboard the SAS Amatola. A short simulation display will be undertaken by the security forces.
