Equality Bill will ensure compliance in government and private sector – Lulu Xingwana

Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana, has said that the Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Bill that the department has developed, will assist to enforce women employment compliance in both government and the private sector.

The Bill, which has been open for public comments, is set to be adopted in parliament. Xingwana added that the imminent adoption of this Bill “will bring about the realisation of women’s empowerment in all spheres of our society”. The Minister was addressing a Joint Machinery meeting of the women, children and people with disability sectors today in Boksburg.

The purpose of the joint meeting is to come up with an integrated approach for institutional support and capacity building for the realisation of rights of women, children and people with disabilities into government policy and programmes, civil society and the private sector including providing equal access and opportunities for people with disabilities.

The two sectors women and people with disabilities are campaigning for women and people with disabilities, to have equal access to economic opportunities in the private and public sectors, as well as be able to own and run their own businesses.

The department of women, children and people with disabilities was established to ensure the mainstreaming of gender, children’s rights and disability considerations into all programmes of government and other sectors. This will help government to respond to issues of these targeted groups in an integrated and coherent manner.
